teacher doing science experiment

“Science is like magic, but real!”

This past Thursday, Maintenance Plumber Bailey Carter visited Explorer Elementary School to teach 2nd-grade students about water filtration. Back in January, Bailey was installing new bottle filler water fountains when students were lining up for Melissa Haney's science class. Bailey noticed their intrigue, inviting them over to observe. She happily answered the students' questions, taking the time to explain to curious minds how things work. Bailey said, “While I was fixing the water fountain, you would have thought the students were witnessing a miracle. They were so intrigued and wanted to see every step of the process.”

Mrs. Haney saw this as a wonderful opportunity and invited Bailey to return for a water filtration presentation. Bailey created a large-scale water filter, complete with pipes, cotton filters, and even rocks, to show natural filtration that can take place in nature. She even brought a small pipe lined with carbon used to clean water, cutting it in half so students could see inside.

Bailey had brought some mud to mix with the water to show how much difference a filter can make in our drinking water. As the water began to pour out clearly, students squealed with joy and curiosity. Some even proclaimed it was like magic. After her presentation, Bailey answered students' questions, and explained the importance of having clean drinking water. Mrs. Haney said, “To have people in the district like Bailey who want to be involved in the schools is amazing.”

Thank you to Bailey and all of our Maintenance staff, who work hard to keep our buildings running and ensure the best environment for our students! We are so #265proud to have you in our Goddard family!
