The air was filled with excitement as the team room at Challenger Intermediate School transformed into a bustling marketplace. Fifth graders at Challenger have enjoyed Market Day for the past few years, a special event where students showcase their entrepreneurial spirit and put their business skills to the test. “These are the kinds of authentic learning experiences that not only shape future innovators and leaders, but provide lasting memories for staff and students alike,” shared Darrin SanRomani, Principal at Challenger.

School staff enthusiastically transformed their insights about student and family interests into a dynamic, fun educational experience. Despite the potential for chaos, Challenger teachers masterfully orchestrated the event to flow smoothly and seamlessly. “My goal is to always provide the best learning experience for students. I always want them to know that we are all willing to do whatever it takes to make them successful,” shared Kaleigh Kear, 5th Grade Teacher at Challenger. School is not always easy for every student, so it’s enjoyable to create something like this to give back to students for all the hard work they put in each day.”

The students had been eagerly preparing for weeks, conceptualizing their products, sourcing materials, and crafting their wares. From homemade crafts and baked goods, to repurposed treasures and original designs, the variety of offerings was a testament to the hard work of the students. Vendors lined the transformed team room, with colorful booths and signage. Sales jingles, hand-lettered signs, and barker-style tactics drew in purchasers quickly and strategically. Lion Bucks, the school currency, is the medium of exchange for Market Day. Students earn Lion Bucks by completing various tasks around the school or by participating in school-wide initiatives. Kear elaborated a bit saying, “Lion Bucks can be spent on coupons in the classroom such as lunch with a friend, PJ day, or a sweet treat.” This provides them with a practical understanding of financial transactions, as well as the value of hard work and compensation for it. As Market Day progressed, and classes transitioned in and out of the marketplace, the room buzzed with activity and excitement. Students eagerly browsed the stalls, admiring the product offerings and carefully considering their purchases.

Sounds of laughter, bargaining, and the excitement of discovering new treasures made this project fun for students and staff alike. Staff members from all across the school popped in throughout the day to make purchases and support the students’ efforts. “Challenger has the most incredible staff,” commented Kear. “Every decision made is student-focused, and we challenge each other to think about the whole child and each of their individual needs. Our school has some great components to support all students in the classroom, such as co-teaching and modeling Universal Design for Learning (UDL). These practices allow us to include all students and provide the right support.”

Participating in Market Day offers students a valuable opportunity to develop a wide range of skills. They learn about budgeting, pricing, marketing, and customer service. “Watching this event come to life every quarter fills me with pride, seeing how the students and staff work together to make it a smooth process,” shared SanRomani. “You get the opportunity to see another side of students, where they get to practice skills like public speaking, real-time math development, and problem-solving strategies. What impresses me most is how this activity ignites the entrepreneurial spirit in each student, and they get to reap the benefits of their hard work.” Students are required to think critically about supply and demand, adjusting their prices and inventory accordingly. Moreover, the experience helps foster self-confidence, creativity, and a sense of accomplishment.

As the day drew to a close, students reflected on their experiences and the lessons they had learned. Many expressed a desire to participate in future Market Days, eager to apply their newfound knowledge and skills. “You get to show what you can do,” shared Dani Negrete-Trego, a 5th Grader who sold her original art at Market Day. “Be proud of your hard work.”

The event is a hit every quarter, successfully demonstrating the power of entrepreneurship and the potential of young minds to create and innovate. “Goddard has the best students, the best families, and the best staff around,” Kear said. “I love coming to work each day with friends and working with families to help ensure success for their children.” Pursuing excellence in education ensures Goddard continues providing diverse and advanced opportunities, such as Market Day at Challenger, for all students.
