One of the treasures of GHS is the Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site (O.W.L.S). We are very proud to have this great resource at GHS which allows students hands-on field work in Ecology and Biology. The OWLS area includes the pond and the waterway between GMS and GHS. This site was the brainchild of former GHS science teacher, Barry Schartz, who proposed it to the BOE and administration when the new building was opened up in 1997. The OWLS program is executed and funded by the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks.
Our site is recognized in the state as one of the best natural areas for any school.
After the yearly controlled burn, visitors will see the new prairie grasses begin to appear from the ashes and by mid summer (if we get some rain), there should be some incredible examples of native tallgrass prairie grasses. The controlled burn is another opportunity to learn about maintaining the health and beauty of a tall grass prairie ecosystem.
Students and the community are welcome to experience the OWLS site with the help of a website that links to 13 QR codes surrounding the site. Visitors can scan the QR code on each sign and it will take them to a website page describing what is being viewed. https://sites.google.com/goddardusd.com/ghsowls/home
GHS Students have contributed to the OWLS site over the years for their Boy Scout Eagle and Girl Scout Gold Star projects. They have enriched the site by adding benches, repairing the boardwalk and creating the website and signs to guide visitors.
OWLS is for all to enjoy, so come and fish off the floating dock, sit in the sun around the pond aeration windmill, go walk the paths and learn about Kansas prairies and wildlife.
